We are anxious for our first ride of the trip. The weather is perfect, sunny 70s with a nice breeze. The first ride is a shuttle of the Maah Daah Hay Trail. The trail itself is indicative of most of North Dakota; hard packed clay that when wet is a bitch to ride through. Luckily we are okay in that regard. The MDH trail is in the National Grasslands and the drive from Watford to the first shuttle point was about an hour. These National Grasslands are impressive in the sense that they seem to go on forever and as you drive along the highway you see large groups of cattle on various farms. Its cool to stand there under the breezy warm air and watch the tall grass fold as the air moves up over the escarpments and down into the valleys. On to the ride. The entire trail is set in what one might describe as a folded golf course of small hills and valleys and hard packed white clay. The total MDH length is about 96 miles but we’re only doing about 22 miles. Its more of a rolling terrain with not the intense climbs or downhills of other trails we’re planning. But a nice mix of the smaller elements. We stopped for lots of pics. An overall really nice ride. The summer thunderstorm came in just as we were finishing up.
Prepping for the ride.
National Grasslands.
